noodling doodling

Speaking of noodles, I had a pretty large bowl of noodle for dinner last night.

I'm a bit bummed that I haven't been showing love to my blog lately.  I still appreciate everyone who stops by to check in.  Aside from a very fast paced work schedule (only two artist including me, our art director, and our production designer to finish the entire movie) I've also been caught up with everyday unexpected happenings of life!  All of which are very very VERY good.  More to share with you all when it becomes official.

In the meantime here is something out of my sketchbook.  I've been playing around with those watercolor pencils which I'm not too fond of since you can't really mix colors.  So please excuse the overuse of primary colors.  Thanks

Another painting sketch from the weekend.  Wish I had started with a comp, but I guess that's why it belongs in my sketchbook.

Wowzers... pretty siiiikk.  A while back my buddy commissioned me to design his tat (Click here to see the original post of the line work) and today I just got these images sent to me.  Talk about ambitious.  He'll be getting it colored next week.  I'm honored he went through with this so I'm going to throw in my color design for free.  Gangstaaaaa...

I wanted to color my line drawing like a coloring book.  The whole time coloring I was thinking, "When I have kids, is this what I'm going to be doing?"  Glad I'm getting some practice in.

This is the painting I'm contributing to the "What If" show at Gallery Nucleus on December 10th.  I hope everyone can make it!  Here is the info http://www.gallerynucleus.com/gallery/exhibition/300

I was very satisfied with my painting at this stage.  Unfortunately a little accident happened with laying resin that I had to repaint a lot of this.  It doesn't look too different so I feel its safe to post now while I wait for the real one to dry.  The size of this piece is 6x6.

Here is the digital comp I started with.  Very rarely do the original turn out better than the comp, but I'm happy I pushed the color more in the end.

Thanks to the water company, I spent 20 minutes with elevator music and an automated msg reminding me my patience is appreciated.  Found a piece of paper and a pen... doodled from the patio of our 5th floor.  Only good thing that came out of waiting.

Happy Holidays Everyone!

I know I'm a couple days early.  Funny thing about growing up is that you get to a point when you no longer recieve red envelopes... you give them.  This is that year.  But I'm still looking forward to an amazing weekend:  Good friends, AMAZING food, lots of alcohol, lots of activities... all in all... HAPPY NEW YEARS!!!

Asia Geographic The Read

During the fall of last year, a publishing company in Singapore wanted to feature me as an aspiring artist for one of their young adult magazines.  They were interested in my life story on how I ended up in this career path and what suggestions I may have for young artists.  It also turned out that they wanted me to write the article.  How embarrassing!  This turned out to be more challenging than most of the obstacles I've encountered in my life.  Well the hardest part of this task was probably editing.  I spent hours each night rewriting and rewriting since I felt so much of everything I have experienced played a huge role on getting me to where I am today.  Finally I focused in on what was relevant to my career and what others may want to read about.

I am so honored to have been given this opportunity to share my words :)  They did an amazing job on the page layouts too!

I started attending Rad Sechrist and Anthony Holden's gesture class here at DWA.  These two are masters for sure.  Both have such solid understanding of gesture and design.  So far it's only been two classes, but I'm definitely looking to getting better.

I prefer the top one, but my boss requested I post the bottom one, too (which is why I splashed in a bit of color).

The Croods/March 2013

So ya'll might be wondering what I do at DreamWorks Animation.  I was hired as a visual development artist in June of 2010 and was assigned to a movie called THE CROODS.  This movie was originally dated to release in March of 2012, but the decision was made earlier in 2011 that we would not be able to push the full potential of this film if we were to rush to meet the deadline.  Since then the art department got resized to only two artists (myself and Maragaret Wuller), the art director (Paul Duncan), and our fearless leader (production designer Christophe Lautrette).  It's been one hell of a ride, but I am more than grateful to be one of the last standing warriors to finish the battle.  In the next few months there should be more publicity to come!

As for now, this poster was released to the public during the Toy Fair in February.  Painted by our magnificent art director... SO MUCH DETAIL.  I had the privilege of designing the color palette and painting the original concept which I'm not too sure if I can show.  No way in hell I could've painted THIS poster.

So busy... yet so thankful.  I wish I had more time to paint though.  Here's a little doodle done on my watercolor moleskin.  Still trying to use those prisma watercolor pencils which I am STILL not a fan of.  Also used a bit of gouache.

Thought I'd show you guys my process for this recent oil painting I did.  I don't always start this way, but this was one of the few larger paintings that I've done so I decided to keep things very loose in the beginning.  I first researched a bunch of tiger images online and did a quick digital comp of it in photoshop.  Since I was unable to find the exact image I had in mind, I photo-bashed a few images together, transform, warp-tool, and readjusted some proportions.  After the image was done, I printed it out and had it next to me while I paint.  Loosely drew in some guidelines, threw in a variety of color in places and just kept painting from there.  Mid way through the painting, I started to correct all the proportions on the body and worked tighter on getting the face right.  As you can see I left out all the stripes until the end which really help tie the painting together.  I had it sitting for a few weeks before laying a temporary varnish on top.

This painting was actually done for my mom's 50th birthday.  I guess she liked it :P

After so many years of loving movies, comic books, super heroes, video games, etc. etc... I'm finally going to comic-con!  I didn't plan on going this year, but I got the opportunity to collaborate with Chris Sanders on a promo poster for The Croods.  Make sure to stop by Chris Sanders' booth and pick one up!  They're limited edition, printed on really nice textured paper, and they're FREE! For more info stop by Chris Sanders' Blog.  I'll be joining him Saturday.  Come by and say hello!

A collaboration with the man himself, Christophe Lautrette.  Damn, his drawings are so lovely... I can paint them all day.  Not sure what he's hoping to achieve with me.  More to come!

Vacation!

FINALLY ON VACATION!  So far I am three weeks in... another three more weeks to go!  I had a chance to stop by the studio today for our crew photo and it's incredible how much I miss going to work.  They all think I'm crazy, but I can't control how my heart feels.  Less about the work, more about the people.  Surrounding yourself with great personalities 8 hours a day is the smartest thing anyone can do, which is why I am always so blessed and honored to be working with such fabulous human beings.

So far I've been roadtripping through national parks.  And for a nature freak like me, the views were jaw dropping and the experience absolutely breathtaking.  I have about 1000 photos to edit.  Just got back into California two days ago and tomorrow I will be flying out to Seattle for a few days.  I've been instagramming (can't believe I'm using that as a verb) my trips so feel free to follow me at artistic_fong for you instagram users.

Here's another idiot.  Joe.  Another drawing done by Christophe Lautrette.  I hate how this guy just doodles while watching t.v. and masterpieces just appear on paper.  He says he likes my painting, but I'm sure he's just saying that to be nice...

Back to the studio!  After six weeks of traveling, lounging, eating, hiking, splurging, anything but drawing, I am happy to be back on my regular work schedule.  New project sounds very exciting!  Although I can't help but feel I'm going to struggle a bit with adapting to a new style... but that's normal.

Anyways, didn't have my first launch until the afternoon so did some studies this morning.  My crappy studies of Edgar Payne, Isaak Levitan, Sorolla, and Sargent (in that order).  Fun to be doodling again on the cintique.

Somehow I got the chance to paint the book cover.  I can never thank the team enough for giving me such an enormous opportunity.  Much love to the tiny and powerful art team Christophe Lautrette, Paul Duncan, Margaret Wuller Hanenberger, and Lauren Malizia.  Size really does not matter.  Thanks to our directors and producers Chris Sanders, Kirk DeMicco, Kristine Belson, and Jane Hartwell.  Six more months to go!  Keep an eye out for the trailer coming in October.

You can also already pre-order this book on Amazon.  I know it's a little early, but it will definitely be well worth the wait: The Art of The Croods

The image below is what I gave to the publishers.  I guess they had a different idea for the font color and text placement.  The white to me just reads more clear.
